This course introduces students to the key themes and issues shaping contemporary British and American literary context from 1980s to the present. It sheds light on themes such as diaspora and multiculturalism, migration and displacement, racial and ethnic minorities, posthumanism, climate fiction and environmental concerns, and the literary responses to the aftermath of 9/11 attacks.
This course engages students critically with contemporary novels that provide a fresh look at the experiences of individuals confronting issues of identity loss, cultural displacement and dislocation, alienation, and cultural hybridity. It also familiarizes them with issues that people of color and ethnic minorities face in contemporary America.
This course also aims to explore how technological advancements—like AI, genetic modification, and cybernetic enhancements—challenge traditional notions of humanity. It also addresses the challenges and
consequences of climate change and environmental degradation focusing on how contemporary narratives
reflect the realities of climate change and ecological disruption. It also sheds light on the far reaching impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, exploring how contemporary literature examines issues of cultural identity, particularly for Muslim and Arab communities, trauma, grief, and loss, often depicting the personal and collective struggles of characters in the aftermath of the attacks.
