This course for Master 2 Applied Linguistics students provides an introduction to Discourse Analysis, defined as "language in use in social context" beyond isolated sentences. By examining various meaningful utterances—including written texts, oral speech, and ESL classroom context, students will investigate "what language is doing" to organize social activity and manage affiliation. The curriculum aims to make the 'hidden workings' of communication visible and debatable. Key topics include communicative competence, pragmatic meaning, context, genre conventions, and cohesion. Students will also explore practical applications for applied linguists, such as analyzing classroom interactions, ELT textbooks, and media domains.
