This module explores the fundamental principles and practices of textual analysis across different genres and themes. It focuses on developing students' reading and comprehension skills through the analysis of diverse texts. Students will learn strategies to effectively interpret, analyse, and comprehend various types of speeches, enhancing their ability to understand complex rhetorical devices, argumentation techniques, and persuasive language. The course emphasizes practical skills in reading comprehension and text interpretation, preparing students to engage meaningfully with more complex textual materials.

Linguistics/Phonetics is a new module that encompasses both linguistics and phonetics. Students of English have to deal with such a module in their first year since it is of paramount importance in their preliminary stages of learning a new language to deal with linguistics and phonetics.

They are two different but interrelated modules. However, the governmental educational policy decided to combine them into one module since they are interrelated. Through such a module, students learn the basic theoretical frameworks and become familiar with the various spheres of application of both fields. 

Students are taught different topics related to Linguistics, such as the functions of language, characteristics of human language, De Saussure’s dichotomies, etc., and they are also taught topics related to phonetics, such as vowels, consonants, diphthongs, triphthongs, etc.

Additionally, they will deal with activities in which they will test their understanding of the theoretical notions and check their pronunciation concerning the learned rules.

This course introduces first-year undergraduate students to the world of literature. It familiarizes them with the basic concepts and terminologies required for literary interpretation and analysis. The course motivates the learners to read and comprehend a various number of selected literary texts as it covers the three main literary genres—prose, poetry and drama and their relevant sub-genres. 

To this end, each chapter is designated to provide the theoretical presentation of lessons defining specific fundamental elements of literature, allowing students to trace the origins and evolution of certain literary forms and their relevant aspects followed by activities and assignments that practically engage students with a variety of literary texts.
